A synthetic analog of CoQ10, the vital cell membrane antioxidant and essential constituent of the ATP-producing mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC). Idebenone is a potent antioxidant, with the ability to operate under low oxygen tension situations. Due to its ability to to inhibit lipid peroxidation, idebenone protects cell membranes and mitochondria from oxidative damage. Idebenone is six times more potent than CoQ10 in its antioxidant abilities. In fact, studies indicate the idebenone is 400 times more effective than Vitamin E or vinpocetine as a free radical eliminator.
